Rough Seas, Big Salmon, and One Heck of a Point Reyes Adventure

Some fishing trips are easy. You launch, run out, find calm water, catch fish, and come home with a clean story.

This was not one of those trips.

We headed out on a Wednesday salmon run with my buddy Slava, my brother Paul, and Slava's son, Vlad. The reports from the day before were excellent. Boats had done very well, with plenty of limits coming in by late morning and early afternoon. But as every salmon fisherman knows, yesterday's bite does not guarantee today's bite.

The forecast already had us watching the weather closely. The ocean was going to be rough, and it absolutely lived up to that prediction. We ran hard for two and a half hours toward the Point Reyes grounds, getting beat up pretty good along the way.

Slava's 23.5-foot Sea Hunt boat handled it beautifully, but I'll be honest: it was one of those days that made me very thankful we were not out there in my 20-foot North River. Slava is an excellent captain with over 20 years of bay and ocean fishing experience. I wouldn't go in a small craft, on a day like this, with anyone, unless I was 100% certain in their experience and abilities.

When we finally found the fleet, it was mostly party boats. There was only one other small boat out there with us. That tells you everything you need to know about the conditions. The fish were there, but getting to them took commitment.

We started with four rods in the water and tried a few different setups. Apexes, flashers, and anchovies were all part of the spread. I had also prepped some anchovies with a dry rub to firm them up and keep them fishing clean. We worked different depths, watched the fleet, made adjustments, and kept grinding.

For a while, nothing happened. We changed colors. We changed setups.

We changed the presentation.

Still quiet.

Then Slava made the move that finally worked: a direct-tie bait setup with no flasher.

That first fish came on beautifully. It was a strong, clean salmon and a great fight.

After a little chaos around the net, we got it in the boat.

Big smiles, high fives, and the kind of energy that instantly makes the whole rough ride feel worth it.

The second fish was even more exciting. It jumped, ran, tangled, and made us work for every inch. There was yelling, steering, moving around the deck, and a whole lot of "don't lose this fish" energy.

But we got it done.

By the end of the day, we landed two awesome salmon, missed two more, and came home with a story we will be talking about for a long time.

Was it an easy day? Not even close.

Was it a wide-open bite like the day before? Definitely not.

Was it an adventure? Absolutely. But only with a crew and equipment you can trust.

That is the thing about salmon fishing. Some days everything lines up perfectly. Other days, you have to earn every bite. You watch the weather, trust the boat and captain, make smart decisions, adjust your gear, and keep fishing.

Come see us at Sweeney's Sports if you want to talk salmon gear, bait, rigging, or what is working out there right now.

See you at the shop.

Pitch Perfect

A Local Angler Turned an Idea Into a Product

When local angler Cohen stopped by Sweeney's Sports, he wasn't selling used gear - he was introducing something he designed and built himself. His handmade rod balancer helps anglers detect subtle bites by keeping the rod perfectly balanced, making it ideal for sturgeon, stripers, and other species that require watching for light strikes.

We loved both the product and the entrepreneurial spirit behind it. After testing the design, we agreed to carry Cohen's handmade rod balancers in the shop, supporting a local maker while giving anglers another innovative tool for their next fishing trip.

One Good Deed Inspires Another

One of the best parts of our fishing community is seeing generosity spread. After purchasing one of the rod balancers featured in a recent video, customer Steve decided to buy a second one - not for himself, but to donate to the next angler under 18 who could use it.

It's another reminder that fishing is about more than the gear. It's about helping others get started, sharing knowledge, and making sure the next generation has every opportunity to enjoy time on the water.
