Happy Independence Day!
Fishing Sitka, Alaska
Some fishing trips are about catching fish. Some are about the people you go with.
And every once in a while, a trip gives you both - plus the kind of scenery, stories, and memories that stick with you for years.
Last September, we had the chance to fish out of Sitka, Alaska with Kingfisher Resort, chasing king salmon, coho, halibut, lingcod, rockfish, and sablefish. It was the kind of trip that reminds you why we love the outdoors in the first place.
The adventure started before the first rod ever hit the water.
Sitka is one of those places that feels special right away - tucked along the coastline, surrounded by mountains, water, working boats, wildlife, and fishing history everywhere you look.
You land, grab your gear, settle into the lodge, and almost immediately you realize:
This is not an ordinary fishing trip.
When we asked the captain what the plan was, he summed it up perfectly:
“Catch fish, don’t die.”
That became the unofficial motto of the trip.
From early mornings at the harbor to long days on the water, the whole experience felt like a true Alaska fishing adventure.
We trolled for salmon, battled halibut from deep water, dropped heavy gear for lingcod, and even fished for sablefish nearly 1,700 feet down using electric reels.
Every day brought something different - new water, new fish, new laughs, and a few moments where everyone on the boat just stopped and appreciated where we were.
There were king salmon on deck, halibut battles that turned into full workouts, double hookups, big smiles, plenty of friendly trash talk, and some unforgettable meals back at the lodge.
The fishing was incredible, but the bigger story was the experience itself: friends on a boat, pushing into new water, trying something different, and coming home with memories that go way beyond the fish boxes.
Trips like this remind us that fishing can be much bigger than a hobby. It can be a reason to travel, a reason to spend time with friends and family, a reason to explore new places, and a reason to reconnect with the wild parts of the world that still feel big and real.
We put together a video from the trip so you can see what Sitka fishing is really like - the lodge, the boats, the fish, the scenery, the laughs, and the adventure.
Watch the video, enjoy the ride, and maybe start thinking about your own next outdoor adventure.
Because sometimes the best fishing story starts with a plane ticket, a packed bag, and a captain saying:
“Catch fish, don’t die.”
New Pond Star Gear in The Shop
Jaime's Donation Helps Young Anglers Get Started
Thanks to the generosity of longtime customer Jaime, several quality rods and reels are finding new homes with the next generation of anglers. Rather than accepting store credit, Jaime chose to donate his gear so kids could spend more time on the water.
It's another great example of how our fishing community comes together to help young anglers build confidence, make memories, and keep the tradition of fishing alive.
Rods were gone in 15 minutes, to 5 happy kids who now have another reason to get out on the water.
From Garage Clutter to New Fishing Adventures
What started as a few rods and reels collecting dust in Edgar's garage turned into an opportunity for someone else to get out on the water. Through the Pond Stars program, we evaluated each item, explained its resale value, and provided $130 in store credit for the collection.
Many used rods and reels may not be high-end, but they still have plenty of life left in them. By giving quality gear a second chance, Pond Stars helps anglers upgrade their equipment while making affordable fishing setups available to the community.
If you have fishing gear that's no longer being used, bring it by Sweeney's Sports - you might be surprised what it's worth.
Not Every Rod Is Worth What You Hope
When Colin brought in a used rod, he was hoping to get $50 for it. After taking a closer look, we found a few issues, including a slight bend that affected its resale value. After checking comparable prices and talking through the condition together, we agreed on a fair offer of $30.
That's how Pond Stars works. Every piece of gear is evaluated based on its condition, demand, and what it can realistically sell for. Our goal is always to offer a fair value while making quality used fishing gear affordable for the next angler who walks through the door.
Affordable Setups Ready for the Water
Looking for a quality fishing setup without spending a fortune? A new Pond Stars collection has arrived with rods and reels priced between $30 and $50, making it easy to gear up for salmon, steelhead, stripers, catfish, and more.
These well-maintained rods and reels are available on our website for easy browsing, with in-store pickup or shipping available. Whether you're building your first setup or adding another rod to your collection, these deals won't last long.
