Napa River Striper Fishing Report August 2025

Napa River Striper Fishing Report

Striper fishing on the Napa River is heating up this August! Our very own Axel—who’s quickly becoming a local expert—limited out after work using jerkbaits from 6th Sense and Rapala. His top fish? A beautiful 37-incher caught on outgoing tide between 8–9 PM.

He’s running a Daiwa Regal LT 3000 on a Tatula rod, backed up by a Shimano Symetre with 30 lb braid. His technique? Targeting structure from his kayak and using a steady retrieve with triple-jerks—just like bass fishing.

If you're looking to gear up, we’ve got everything Axel uses here at the shop. Come by Sweeney’s Sports and talk to Axel—he’ll gladly help you get on fish. Striper season is on, so hit the water!

Latest Northern California Fishing Update

What’s Biting: The North Coast Halibut Scene

The Pacific halibut bite along the North Coast remains slow but shows cautious optimism. According to recent reports from Fishing the North Coast, Pacific halibut activity has yet to fully ignite in most ports—but a handful of fish have been landed off Trinidad and Crescent City, offering hope that better days are ahead. Boats out of Eureka have reported fair but improving catch rates, though persistent wind and rough conditions continue to suppress effort.

Over on the lower coast, recent outings have shown moderate halibut activity paired with solid rockfish and lingcod bites. A half‑dozen Pacific halibut were landed this week, including a 65‑pounder.

Harbor Highlights: Charter Boats Still Working

Fish Emeryville’s weekly dock report (from August 2) shows consistent halibut success across several boats. Limits were reported, especially for passengers targeting striped bass and halibut combos.

Anglers saw strong action on calm seas, catching both halibut and desirables like rockfish and lingcod.

Conditions & Outlook

  • Weather remains the biggest factor. Wind and rough water continue to keep boats tied at the dock in many ports.

  • If conditions smooth out, expect catch rates to rebound quickly—especially from Shelter Cove to Crescent City.

  • Rockfish and lingcod remain reliable under the right conditions, offering consistent fishing even when halibut stalls out.

Sweeney’s Tip of the Week

  1. Fish calm-weather windows—halibut trips succeed when the ocean cooperates.

  2. Pack for variety—lingcod and rockfish remain strong even during halibut slumps.

  3. Check local charters regularly—boats in Eureka and Emeryville are producing solid numbers when the weather allows.

What to Expect in the Coming Week

If offshore conditions improve, halibut action is expected to pick up across the North Coast soon. Anglers should watch forecasts for small-craft warnings or offshore wind warnings before booking. If in doubt, local charters—especially around Emeryville or Eureka—are often first to choose drills if conditions permit.

Daiwa BG Spinning Reel

Introducing the BG Series Fishing Reel, a game-changer for anglers seeking superior performance and durability. Daiwa Fuego LT Spinning Reel

FUEGO LT is ZAION V carbon-fiber body, not a nylon-based plastic that you see in other manufacturers’ reels at this price-point. The new FUEGO stands alone in the marketplace at this price. You also get some weight reduction (3%-5%) as a result of this material design change.

Fuego also uses an AIRDRIVE ROTOR that reduces quite a bit of weight. Daiwa also incorporated a solid AIRDRIVE BAIL versus a tubular design. The reason for that is the metal we’re using is very strong, rigid, and doesn’t bend—yet, it’s thinner and lighter. Our goal was to reduce the weight of the rotation, which reduces the weight of the reel as well. It also makes it easier to turn the handle.

Penn Fierce IV Spinning Combo

Saltwater anglers choose the PENN Fierce IV spinning combos because they want a platform that gets the job done. The rod features a graphite composite blank, one-piece stainless steel Dura-GuidesTM, and EVA grips for a comfortable fish fighting experience. The reel boasts a full metal body and sideplate and is paired with the PENN HT-100 Drag. By adding sealed bearings, we gave this already dependable platform an additional edge. The Fierce® IV combo can handle any inshore, nearshore, or surf application with the durability you can expect from PENN.

Give Your Gear a Second Cast

Got old rods, reels, or tackle sitting around collecting dust? It's time to give your gear a second cast — and get rewarded in the process.

At Sweeney’s Sports in Napa, we’re now offering cash or store credit when you bring in your quality used fishing equipment as part of our growing Used Gear Buy Back Program. Whether you’re upgrading your setup, cleaning out the garage, or just want to trade unused gear for something fresh, we make it easy.

Why Trade In?

  • Get Cash or Store Credit — your choice. Store credit gets you the best value, but we’re happy to pay cash for eligible gear.

  • Support Local Anglers — your used gear gets a new life in the hands of someone who’ll actually use it.

  • Help the Planet — reduce waste and keep great equipment in circulation instead of the landfill.

  • Make Room for What’s Next — clear out old gear and get ready for your next big catch.

What We’re Looking For

We’re buying rods, reels, tackle, fly gear, and select accessories that are in good working condition. Think quality over quantity — if it’s something you’d still fish with, chances are someone else would too.

How It Works

  2. We’ll inspect it within a few days and give you a no-pressure offer.
