Napa Fishing Report

Napa River

Napa River striper fishing has been decent over the last week. Anglers are finding schools of fish throughout the river main and in the sloughs. Many are undersized schoolies, but we are seeing 20+ inch fish caught at a rate of about four shakers to one keeper.

The water is still fairly stained, so use loud rattletraps and white swimbaits. Over the last few weeks, the largest stripers and sturgeon were caught using live bait - Ghost Shrimp, Grass Shrimp, and Bullheads.

For bank fishing, use cut anchovies. Or, catch your own live bait using red worms and a bobber setup near banks and in small inlets.

This week we fished Sea Ranch from the bank and got a lot of bites from schoolies. I walked up to the Cuttings Warf dock and saw George pick up a nice 17-incher on cut sardine.

They are out there. You won’t catch if you don’t have lines in the water.

Lake Berryessa

Kokanee fishing is still sporadic and landlocked king salmon action has slowed down a bit. Troll speedy shiners behind a dodger at a depth of 30-70 feet. Another option is to troll anchovies behind a bright-colored dodger using a Pro-Troll Roto Chip electronic bait holder. The Narrows is the best place to start, but you may have to cover some water to find them. The trout bite is fair.

The algae bloom that is occurring right now dispersed the bait and the fish is scattered. You’ll have to put in some work to find them. As the bloom disperses, fishing should improve significantly over the coming weeks.

Check out the video report by JIGIT, fishing for kings in Lake Berryessa. If you hit a slow day and can't get hookups trolling, run anchovies with and without flashers and try zig-zag pattern vs. trolling in a straight line.
