Fishing conditions across the region remain steady as we continue waiting for the full spring transition. While we haven’t seen the big seasonal surge yet, there are still productive opportunities - especially for bass anglers.
This week’s update also includes exciting news about the Napa Fishing Club, new gear arrivals, and a reminder about our newly available office and clubhouse rental space.

Fishing Report
Napa River & Lake Berryessa Overview
Conditions for stripers in the Napa River, sturgeon fishing activity, and trout and kokanee at Lake Berryessa remain largely unchanged from last week.
We are still waiting for the seasonal transition that typically brings more aggressive feeding patterns. Until that shift happens, anglers should continue focusing on the techniques that have been producing steady results over the past few weeks.
Bass Fishing Update – Lake Berryessa
Bass fishing continues to be one of the strongest bites right now as fish move into spawning mode.
Recent trips have produced solid catches, with bass ranging from two to five pounds. Many fish are moving into shallow areas such as coves and creeks, making them more accessible and aggressive during this time.
Recommended baits and techniques include:
Swimbaits (3.8-inch Keitech-style) paired with weedless hooks, ideal for targeting bass chasing baitfish in shallow water
Drop shot rigs using finesse worms like Roboworms for consistent results
Craw-colored jigs, particularly red or fire-craw patterns, effective for smallmouth bass
Wacky-rigged Senko worms, a reliable go-to presentation that continues to perform
Recent outings have seen anglers landing more than ten fish in a single trip, with many catches falling in the two- to three-pound range.
If you’re looking for consistent action right now, bass fishing remains one of the best options.
Napa Fishing Club Update
The Napa Fishing Club continues to gain momentum, and we’re excited to share that the official programming schedule has been finalized and is now live.
Here’s what members can expect:
Monthly Club Activities
Third Saturday of each month: Club meetings featuring guest speakers
Second Saturday of each month: Free skill-building sessions covering rigging, bait preparation, and fishing techniques
Group fishing trips and outdoor events, including club camping outings
Several major events are also scheduled:
Learn to Fish Day – May (Napa River)
Club Derby – September
Lake Berryessa Camping - July
Additional member-only fishing opportunities throughout the season
One of the highlights of the club will be community-driven fishing trips, where members with boats can invite others to join and share fishing experiences.
Another important mission of the Napa Fishing Club is youth engagement. Fifty percent of annual membership fees are immediately reinvested into helping kids get involved in fishing by providing equipment and store support.
With the programming now finalized, membership is officially open. To learn more and join, please visit: https://www.sweeneyssports.com/napa-fishing-club
Shop Updates
We’ve had several exciting developments inside the shop this week.
Axel Is Back
Many longtime customers will recognize Axel, who has been an important part of the Sweeney Sports team. After some time away, he has returned to the shop, and we’re excited to have him back helping customers and supporting daily operations.
Be sure to stop by and say hello next time you visit.
New Gear Arrivals
Multiple shipments have arrived recently, including products from:
Shimano
Okuma
Ugly Stik
We are continuing to expand our inventory of rods, reels, and tackle designed for salmon, kokanee, trout, and bass fishing.
With bass currently spawning, we are especially well stocked with bass gear to help anglers take advantage of current conditions.
Community Appreciation
As the Napa Fishing Club continues to grow, we want to thank everyone who has supported this effort.
Building a strong outdoor community takes dedication and teamwork, and the positive feedback we’ve received has been incredibly encouraging. Our goal is to create a welcoming space where anglers can connect, learn, and share experiences while introducing more young people to the sport.
Final Thoughts
With new gear arriving, club activities launching, and community momentum building, there’s plenty to look forward to in the weeks ahead.
Thank you for your continued support - we appreciate every visit, every conversation, and every trip shared with the Sweeney Sports community.
See you next week.
