Cuttings Wharf Dock Damaged by Fire

Last week, a large portion of the Cuttings Wharf dock on the north side—known to many as the "fishing side"—was badly burned. Whether this was an act of negligence or malicious intent, it’s disheartening to see such senseless damage done to a place that’s brought joy and connection to so many in our community. What did this dock ever do to deserve that?

At Sweeney’s, we’ve been in direct contact with the Napa County Public Works Department. Unfortunately, there is currently no set timeline for when the dock will be repaired. Here’s the latest official update:

"Public Works staff is currently obtaining professional input on the safety of the remaining structure and discussing options for addressing the dock. We are obtaining quotes for a variety of options and determining what permitting obligations we have with various regional, State, and Federal agencies that control work in waterways."

While we’re hopeful for a quick resolution, realistically, the process may take some time.

In the meantime, we ask that all visitors—especially boaters and anyone fishing from the north side of the dock (which is still marked "No Fishing")—show patience and respect toward one another. Let’s keep the community spirit strong while we await repairs.

We’ll continue to stay on top of this issue and will share updates as we get them.

We’ve been actively discussing the idea of organizing a fundraiser to help expedite repairs to the dock. However, since multiple agencies are involved—and there are permitting requirements at the city, county, and state levels—we’re holding off until we receive a clear green light. Once we understand what’s allowed and what’s needed, we’ll be ready to rally the community to support this important cause.

Fly Fishing Report

Berryessa is still fishing. The bite has slowed down. There are still plenty of bass around. But it seems like the big boys are down deep. We’re catching fish more in the 1.5 to 2 pound range.

Areas to look for: Rock piles, long points shooting out into the lake, in and around any structure. Stripping small leaches or wooly buggers for pan fish is a fun and productive alternative to bass fishing on Berryessa too!

Putah creek has entered hight flow season. With flows ramping up to mid 500 range. Nymphs under a bobber with plenty of weight or euro style nymphing to get your flies deep in the water column. With the flows being high, you can get away with heaver tippet. And sometimes bigger flies. All the standard Putah flies will produce fish this time of year.

WATCH OUT FOR RATTLESNAKES.

Welcome to high flows and high heat on Putah Creek!!
